Bollywood films releasing on OTT has been a controversial decision for the theatre industry. The CEO of PVR Cinemas spoke out against filmmakers who were shifting movies to OTT due to the pandemic, after the release of Gulabo Sitabo on Amazon Prime Video. Uday Shankar, the chairman of The Walt Disney Company India, welcomed the change of releasing Bollywood movies to OTT and disagreed with theatre owners.
While speaking to a news portal, Uday Shankar stated that this crisis came in as real opportunity, as theatres were shut down while movies were ready for release. While telling this, he also said that even while the theatres will reopen, people will not be rushing towards them to watch movies due to theCovid 19 pandemic.
As announced, the first movie of Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex will be Sushant Singh Rajput’s last movie ‘Dil Bechara’, which will start streaming from July 24.
Akshay Kumar’s “Laxmi Bomb”, “Sadak 2” featuring Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn’s “Bhuj:The Pride of India” are among Bollywood films that are headed for direct release on streamers Disney+ Hotstar as theatres remain close due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Abhishek Bachchan’s “The Big Bull”, Vidyut Jammawal’s “Khuda Haafiz” and “Lootcase” featuring Kunal Kemmu and Rashika Dugal are some other titles, which are getting a direct release on the digital platform.
The initiative “First Day First Show ki home delivery’ by Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex is aimed at re-imagining the theatrical experience, which has been on halt from mid-March in the wake of the coronavirus-led shutdown.
All these films will be releasing in the streamer between July and October.
