Top 5 Biggest Hits of 2020 First Quarter

The year 2020 hasn’t really been good for Bollywood. With lockdown in effect, a lot of big movie releases have been put on hold. But, the movies that released even before this didn’t really set the box office on fire. Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior remains the sole blockbuster of the first quarter of this year. There were expectations from Tiger Shroff’s ‘Baaghi 3’, Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor’s ‘Street Dancer 3D’, Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’, but none of these films were able to cross the 100-crore mark in the domestic market.

Let’s have a look at the top 5 highest grossing movies of this year up until now:

  • Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior – Rs.269.70 crore

This period drama directed by Om Raut, which was released in January, had an amazing run at the box office. The film boasts of an impressive ensemble, which includes Bollywood megastars such as Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Saif Ali Khan. The movie accumulated Rs. 269.70 crore and is currently the biggest blockbuster of 2020.

  • Baaghi 3

This is the third installment of the Baaghi franchise, and the second time Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor have been paired on the silver screen. The movie was released on 6 March and was having a good run at the box office earning a total of 92.31 crore.

However, due to the corona pandemic, the theaters were shutdown and the film couldn’t continue its success and fell just short of the coveted 100 crore mark. Nevertheless, it is the second highest grossing film of the year following the period drama Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior.

  • Street Dancer 3D – Rs. 62.62 crore

This dance flick was directed by Remo D’Souza and the cast includes Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor and Nora Fatehi along with other talented dancers. The movie was released opposite Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Panga’ but managed to win the hearts of audience. The film has earned Rs. 62.62 crore and is the third most successful movie of the year.

  • Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan – Rs. 58.92 crore

Over the past few years, Ayushmann Khurrana has turned himself into a bankable movie star. His films also generally have a social message with them, which is also true for Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. The movie focuses on same-sex relationships and stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao and was directed by Hitesh Kewalya. The movie was appreciated by the critics and was given positive reviews. However, this time the success was not to be found. The movie had a good opening weekend but could only reach to 58.92 crore at the box office.

  • Malang – Rs. 57.96 crore

Mohit Suri’s romantic thriller ‘Malang’ stars Disha Patani and Aditya Roy Kapoor in lead roles along with Kunal Kemmu and Anil Kapoor. The film received good reviews from the critics and the audience was also supportive of it. The movie grossed Rs. 57.96 crore at the box office.
